"A literary Marie Kondo with the inclinations of a relationship counselor, I held one book after another and listened to the conversation that arose between the book and me. I didn't ask if that book gave me joy. I asked, instead, whether we were still right for each other. Was I holding on to it because I was holding on to a past set of beliefs? If so, what were they? In acknowledging how much these books had helped me imagine and build my past and present, I began to understand what I wanted for my future."
